A familiar silhouette can take on an entirely different character through fabric. In honor of our 20th Anniversary and the opening of our new showroom, we partnered with textile artist William Storms on a special project to highlight Danish brand GUBI's new local upholstery production here in the US. Storms designed and created eleven original textiles inspired by New York City, bringing the city’s colors, patterns, and everyday details to a few key upholstered designs from GUBI's incredible collection. The result is a series of distinctive pieces that pair considered furniture design with the individuality of bespoke textiles. All chairs are currently on display in our new showroom, and these custom fabrics are now available exclusively through SUITE NY.

THE COLLABORATION
Collaboration
Last month, SUITE NY brought GUBI, design duo GamFratesi, and William Storms together for a two-day celebration of design, material, and all things NYC. Hosted in our new showroom, the event introduced a special installation of GUBI seating upholstered in fabrics Storms conceived and wove specifically for the occasion. Each textile draws from a different facet of the city, creating a dialogue between GamFratesi’s furniture designs, GUBI’s Danish design heritage, and Storms’ distinctive approach to weaving.

THE COLLECTION
The Collection
Eight Beetle Dining Chairs, each in a different Storms textile, are joined by the Séjour, Bat Lounge, and Gent Chair. Together, the eleven pieces showcase the range of Storms’ work, from graphic lines and shifting checks to richly layered textures that include leather cord and metallic threads. Conceived specifically for this collaboration, each fabric gives a familiar GamFratesi design a character all its own.

INSPIRED BY THE CITY
Inspired
Each textile began with inspiration from the city. Cab takes its cue from the unmistakable yellow of New York taxis; Mantle nods to the Yankees through a quietly shifting pinstripe; and Ledger Stripe draws its black-and-ivory rhythm from the NY Ledger. Elsewhere, designs such as Pigeon, Hudson, Crosswalk, Gramercy, and City Block interpret the city through metallic threads, tactile yarns, linear patterns, and unexpected color. Together, they form a distinctly New York collection.

NYC EXCLUSIVE BEETLES
NYC Exclusives
| With the iconic Beetle Chair being GUBI's most recognized design, these eight individual interpretations show how dramatically upholstery can change its expression. Each chair pairs GamFratesi’s recognizable form with one of Storms’ original textiles, making it a singular piece within the collection. The chairs were upholstered in the United States through GUBI’s local production program, which offers shorter lead times on select Beetle styles. Specifiers can choose from a selection of graded-in fabrics or COM, opening up possibilities for a more personal approach to the design.

BEYOND THE BEETLE
Beyond Beetle
The collaboration extends to three additional GUBI designs, each paired with a textile created specifically for its specific form. The Séjour Chair, Bat Lounge, and Gent Chair each offer a distinct expression of William Storms’ approach to color, texture, and material. The exclusive Storms textiles featured on each piece are available through SUITE NY for designers looking to bring the collection’s material palette into other projects.
